Is doing it over the phone with a competant CSR a safer bet? Worst case scenario, you will have credit to use on CO, right?
Over the phone you'll have no record of the fare rules at all and be completely at their mercy.  You won't have credit you'll have a PNR that can require a change fee and can only be used by that passenger.  After you rebook another trip for that passenger the remainder will be issued as a credit.  Assuming the airline doesn't ban you/close down your account first...
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

What is phishy about this behavior? Isn't it normal to book and cancel/re-book? I'm talking about doing this once or twice, not every other week.

Means that it's behavior that risks causing a "terrible" FR. More reading here: http://www.dansdeals.com/wiki/AMEX_FR_TRIGGER_LIST

You could just go and buy two platinum suits from Jo A Bank. Problem solved.

Refundable Flights/Bonus/Chase Sapphire
« Reply #67 on: July 28, 2011, 01:24:08 AM »
At the advice of another DD.com forumer, I was told that I had 2 good options as far as meeting my 3k limit for the Chase Sapphire Preferred and the 50k bonus that it gives.  It'd be nice to collect because if possible it'd help with planning for YK and Sukkot and how to get from here to New York to California back to here(SoFlo)

I've been fairly hesitant to do the mint because of some articles like the once-posted Y-a-h--o--o article....and really, I can't wait much longer.  Maybe 2 weeks more(bill comes around Tisha B'Av, slightly after).

The first suggested alternative was to buy and return something at a small loss.  The second was to buy a flight that could be refunded--obviously point B being taka far far away and expensive to get to.

Can anyone volunteer how one would do so SAFELY?  I'm a yeshiva bochur so its not like I can afford to throw my credit line around without knowing I can pay it.  The goal here is to understand how the process works:
1.) Which airlines
2.) Types of refunds and all the weird stuff relating to vouchers and the like
3.) Effect of a refund on your sign-up bonus when you meet the required spending prior to refund
4.) How often one can do this
5.) Best way-- Phone vs Computer

You can forget about the mint in any event.  The gig is up.

Thank you irleetnoob for that link.
Does spending $1000 a month on amazon payments (basically charging yourself) trigger a FR?
$1000 for me and $1000 for my husband. Its the easiest way to spend $2000 a month without spending a penny.

No, it might. YMMV. Not worth the risk, but that doesn't mean it's definite.

It's definitely risky behaviour if you run payments to and from yourself. If you keep it between you and another party (friend, etc), then it's probably less suspicious. In any case, don't admit you're doing shady stuff. YMMV

Why wouldn't it work for Sapphire cards?

How would Amex know who you're paying, unless the same agent is F/R'ing both accounts?

I did a $1000 charge via Amazon Payments and a $1000 charge via Paypal on my Business Gold and Amex only called me about the Paypal charge to make sure it was legit.

I'm thinking more about being shut-down/noticed by Amazon. My bad, should've clarified.

I agree with that 100%, with Amazon you're risking account closures of both accounts.
