i remember them when i was a kid in baltimore,

people had to use umbrellas to walk, driving was a nightmare, the noise drives you insane,

i remember that my brother thought they were awesome to play with and also found out that if you pull off the back legs their heads pop off! also they have green or white blood, nasty crunchy little buggers!

I definitely remember seeing these as a kid in Queens.
+1, though for me it was in Lawrence. And I feel like I used to see/hear them every summer, but apparently that must be my memory playing tricks on me since they don't come around that frequently.

We used to go around to all the trees finding the shells they shed. It just looks like a bug perched wherever they shed, it stays attached to the surface (like this). I thought I once saw a cicada kill and drag a wasp down down a whole, but a quick google search tells me it must have been the other way around (see here and here).
