from wikipedia
Whatever its origins in the colonial period, scholars agree that "redskin" underwent a process of pejoration due to the increasingly disparaging use of the term through the 19th and early 20th centuries.[1] In modern dictionaries of American English it is labeled "usually offensive",[2] "disparaging",[3][4] "insulting",[5] or "taboo".[6]
So I'm not alone.
Who's with you that it means prowess?
i say again. Are you actually claiming that the reason for the name was to mock native americans? Are you actually saying thats why they named the team redskins?
And wikipedia is NOT a valid source for anything.
But since you mention it, from Wikipedia
"Supporters of the Redskins name note that three predominantly Native American high schools use the name for their sports teams, suggesting that it can be acceptable.[51] However, in 2013 the principal of one of these, Red Mesa High School in Teec Nos Pos, Arizona, said that use of the word outside American Indian communities should be avoided because it could perpetuate "the legacy of negativity that the term has created".[52] Teec Nos Pos, in the Navajo Nation, is 96.5% Native American. Wellpinit, Washington, a town within a reservation of the Spokane people, is 79.3% Native American.[53] In 2014, Wellpinit High School voted to keep the Redskins name.[54] The third school, Kingston High School in Kingston, Oklahoma is 57.69% Native American.[8"
If it is good for the goose its good for the gander. Saying that one person can use a word but another cannot is BS.
