No i definitely understand that infringing on intellectual rights is wrong when it causes a loss to them (which is today's system).

I'm not sure why you keep going back to medicine as the only exception, would you rather not have a smartphone for another 100 years (if it is invented at all) or wait a year or two for the "newest" smartphone technology to trickle down and become more affordable?

If anything it's more of an exact science than anything else. Do you think these guys are sitting in labs throwing darts at the wall to decide what ingredients they're going to use to tackle alzheimers? I mean sure, there have been lucky breaks (penicillin), but medicine is the result of years of calculated studying and tinkering.
