There are so many random sports in the olympics, and especially as Americans, we kind of ignore the ones we don't really compete in. Whenever I look at the medal tables, I always think to myself that Norway leads all time because they pick up a million medals in dumb sports like cross country.

Just watched the men's cross country classic sprint final. Wow. There is some serious athleticism at play here. This guy Klaebo was unreal. They're all bunched up for the first minute, and then boom - Klaebo just starts straight up running, with no slowing down. Ends up winning by a huge margin. Similar story in the women's. Not quite as dominant, but another big Scandinavian athlete (this time a Swede) just kicks it in gear halfway through and crushes the field.

Cross country is no less interesting than curling or luge or any of the dozens of olympic sports that no one cares about longer than a few weeks every 4 years. Dumb to say that one medal is worth less than another. The only sport that has mainstream interest is hockey and the NHL isn't sending any players. But that's the olympics.

I though I was being clear that the sentiment was motivated by homerism, but even then I never said any medal is worth less.

My comment was more about medal distribution among the sports. You have large numbers of medals for competitions that don't seem all that different from one another. For example, the Dutch get all their winter medals from speed skating. Norway is slightly more diversified, but still gets most of their medals from disciplines where you ski distances (cross country, biathlon, nordic combined). Contrast that with a countries like Germany or Canada, which seem much more diversified, possibly suffering in their totals because of that. Even the US at the moment is basically all snowboard medals this year.

It can be even worse in the summer olympics, with swimming and track and field offering a zillion medals, and individual athletes being able to compete for so many medals in one year.
The only sport that has mainstream interest is hockey and the NHL isn't sending any players. But that's the olympics.
If you define mainstream interest as not interested the rest of the year, then yes - hockey will be the only winter sport anyone cares about. But snowboarding definitely generates the most buzz, with figure skating probably even more popular worldwide.

You can't have it both ways. If being good at something means you can medal multiple times within a discipline, than diversified talent should only increase the amount of medals you win. But the reality is - every event is unique and requires different training, and that's probably why athletes don't usually participate in more than 1 event. Regarding diversity - it's not like an elite American cross country skier has any less chance of winning Gold because an American snowboarder from the same country won Gold. The American Olympic program is well funded (I'm sure Germany is as well) and can support the top trainers from all disciplines.

America sucks at the Olympics and there's no whitewashing that. As you mentioned yourself - we are good at snowboarding and nothing else. While tiny Norway is far ahead of us. No excuses.

America sucks at the Olympics? That's news to me. The have as many summer medals as the next 3 countries combined, and they have more winter medals than anyone other than Norway. In fact, the last time Norway had more medals than the US in a winter olympics was 1998. The winter games were founded on various types of skiing, and that's where Norway excels. They built up a big lead in the first several winter games when it was basically all skiing, and they keep the pace more or less by staying dominant in those disciplines.
