The researchers get the statistics on this issue the same primary ways statistics are gathered about these sort of things.

1. Surveys.
2. Crime statistics gathered through law enforcement.
3. Gathering media reports (similar to what Everytown does with mass shootings - except  here it's to show the life saving utility).

1. Factually it doesn't take more time. It's easy to carry multiple handguns, it's easy to reload them, and it's been done before. Fact.

2. The only use of an AR is to murder?! It's these sort of nutso statements that precludes any serious discussion. There's a reason why millions of law abiding citizens own AR's and is not to go around murdering people.

And yes, after Heller banning common firearms is illegal. And 2A is a civil right.

(It's these sort of ignorant, and frankly crazy, statements that cause gun owners to tune out people like you and to suspect that your true agenda is a total gun ban.)

4. There are plenty of comments on this thread who want to ban all AR's, yourself included I believe. Someone posted that all guns should be banned. A link to a NYT article that called for a repeal of 2A was posted.

I showed a learned opinion written by well known scholar, who has published widely on economics and political science (he's an educated person with statistics [1]), and provided the Google keywords where anyone can start to educate themselves as well.

The facts are right there, being quoted in condensed form by a renowned scholar, and that exact search pulls up several articles that quote specific sources (surveys, crime statistics, etc.).

+1 I've come across that claim numerous times, but I didn't quote it because there seems to be no proof to it. I've yet to come across any proof that the numbers going around have any basis.

1 school shooting is too many but As pointed out in the article,  exaggerating the numbers doesn't help the debate. 1

Unfortunately, I think @dan hit it on the head in the beginning of this thread,  we've become numb to these incidents. I heard several interviews of students at the school, they talked as if they expected this to happen,  going so far sayinh how  they used to joke that if their school would have a shooting, this killer would be most likely to perpetrate it.

I don't think maturity is a factor in this, this is a more of a factor of mental health. How developed one is at that age. You can have many 30 year olds etc. with a maturity developed for less then many 19 year Olds.
