The place is a bit dirty and not easy to go down the street with a pram (if that is relevant). you can buy lots of knockoffs etc.
there are some really nice hotels (however in Chaweng there aren't any hotels you can use points to stay). generally the service is really good and Thai ppl are very friendly.
I stayed at a very nice boutique hotel called Kirikayun . the rooms weren't big but everything else was great (pool right on/overlooking beach). it is a 7-8 minute walk from Chabad. there are many hotels closer if you dont to walk on shabbos. definitely do not need to rent a car.
