I recall once seeing a Hebrew Mishpacha magazine where the was a column by Rabbi Lau (written by someone on his behalf) in which there was a story which supposedly happened at a meeting of Shluchim in Russia. The story doesn't hold water due to timeline, and is actually an adaptation of a story from the time of the Tzemach Tzedek which is brought down in Zichron Yaakov (R' Y. Lifshitz).

I emailed Mishpacha editor, but as far as I could tell there was never a correction made.

The story doesn't hold water due to timeline, and is actually an adaptation of a story from the time of the Tzemach Tzedek which is brought down in Zichron Yaakov (R' Y. Lifshitz).

I emailed Mishpacha editor, but as far as I could tell there was never a correction made.

I remember hearing this about 20 years ago from a FM (a yerushalmi), but I don't know what her source is.

בטקס שהתקיים בבניני האומה אתמול, השתתף הרב הראשי לישראל (לשעבר) הרב לאו, וסיפר על מורו ורבו הרב שלמה זלמן אוירבך שפעם ניגש אליו בחור מישיבתו "קול תורה" בבית וגן, וביקש לו היות ויש לו מועקה בלב הוא רוצה ללכת להתפלל בקברי צדיקים בצפון, ענה לו הגרש"ז: למה לך להטריח את עצמך עד הצפון, כאן מעבר הכביש (הר הרצל) אתה יכול להתפלל על קברי גדולים שנהרגו על קדושת השם. ע"כ

The story kept morphing until:
ענה לו הרב: "כשאני מרגיש צורך להתפלל על קברי צדיקים, אני הולך להר הרצל, לקברי החיילים שנפלו על קידוש השם".

I’d like to see a picture of RS”Z on הר הרצל.

Apparently family members claim the whole story is bogus:

הסיפור אודות התלמיד שאמר לו ללכת להתפלל בה הרצל לא מאומת, ואין עדות על כך שהסיפור אכן היה. בני משפחתו ומקורביו מכחישים את הסיפור, שלא מתאים לדעותיו של הרב, אף שלא השמיע אותם ברבים. חבל שסיפור כזה מופיע בתור עובדה, ללא שקיימת עדות ברורה או מקור אמין לסיפור הזה. מרוב ניפוח היה כבר מי שסיפר שהרב בעצמו היה עוצר בהר הרצל [1], דבר שלדעת תלמידיו ודאי לא היה.

Quite obvious that if it was really a case of "כשאני מרגיש צורך להתפלל על קברי צדיקים, אני הולך להר הרצל, לקברי החיילים שנפלו על קידוש השם" then we would have better sources than Rav Lau. Besides of the fact that some stories are so bizarre that it's a waste of effort to debunk them.
