Passengers are offered, a hotel for the night, with a $20 food voucher. Rebooking for throughout tomorrow.

Shortage of agents for rebooking and hotels.

ETA: seems UA couldn't do better then a 3-star Ramada Plaza hotel

If one booked a Aisle seat will a Aisle Seat be reserved for him on the bus
and same by Window?

Out of curiosity what do people expect - better safe than sorry - the smoke alarm wen toff (was it an internal alarm or the one in the bathroom?).

They did a 'emergency landing' (that's what its called when you divert not for a airport weather situation but an inplane abnormality).

Should they send a plane there right away? Should they give everyone cash and tell them all to each take a uber or taxi?

Send a plane. Sleep them there, then fly them from there the next day.

Really is such a non story, EWR is a hub they have much more of an infrastructure there to deal with people. Just made sense to bring them back.
