Jewelry for DW
« on: March 12, 2018, 06:05:09 PM »
DW wants custom 2-tone ring that is most durable; in other words least likely to fade or tarnish over time.  She wants to wear it everyday

If value of metal is not a factor whats the best option: stainless steel, 10k gold, 14k gold, pewter? other metals ?

Platinum is your best best. Costly, but will never tarnish, ever.

Yes it’s less then 18k now. But platinum is very hard to work with and will still end up costing more

I don’t know how old u are but in a couple of years gold would not tarnish. If it’s “loosing it’s luster” that’s comes from abuse, can’t really avoid that on a jewish women’s finger even if u using platinum +18k. The advantage with platinum is A) it’s stronger and will not scratch as easy B) naturally white so it will stay whiter longer.

In order to keep gold white and luster-full, the gold is coated with rhodium. The rhodium will fade over time and the ring will loose its luster. There is the option of getting 10k gold and taking it to your local jeweler every few years for a rhodium polish.
Otherwise i would stick to platinum as its shine will never fade. Also if this ring will be hosting diamonds or other stones , platinum is known to hold them in place most securely.
Also, if you specify what type of ring you are looking for , i may be able to point you in the right direction price wise.

Only the white gold is plated with rhodium.

are you saying that 10K and 14K are the same in this respect that rhodium will fade over time?

platinum can be two-toned?

so yellow gold has a longer lasting luster/color time period?
