United late fee

In the past ive always been successful booking a mileage tickets a few weeks in advance and then changing it, avoiding the late fee. I tried now but they didn't let without paying the fee. Does anyone know of any workaround?

I called today and they said I can only change if I pay the fee. Called again and they said its written in the notes of the ticket that the customer is aware of fee to change the flight and nit to change it without the fee... any tips?

If it's within 24hrs of booking cancel the ticket & rebook to get rid of the notes,  & then call in to switch to your dates
