You definitely need to be cognizant of fees and thesholds, but there are too many factors at play to call this 2.4%.

You need to factor in the ability to ask for the fee to be waived, retention bonuses, versatility, forex, and much more. I'm not a fan of a calculation like that unless everything is equal.

Then it's a meaningless number.

Really what you should do is spend the $25k within the first two months and downgrade or cancel for a refund of the AF. The  ridiculous part of this whole thing is that you'd do much better before with the 50k SUB on the A+. Nobody asked for this card and nobody really wants it. I have a feeling that their numbers are going to be really low and they'll introduce a SUB at some point.

Be careful. He might post a spreadsheet from CB that takes hours to update to save you .02  :)

Agreed. With a 40-50K signup the card will make sense.

Agreed. With a 40-50K signup the card will make sense.
Then it becomes a very compelling card, enough to make people put their non category spend on it which is what they need.

Yup. Very surprised it launched without a signup bonus. They overplayed their hand.
Still can make sense though, especially if you want QF for LY or JL for EK with the versatility to earn 3%. Also depends on how strict they are with waiving the fee.

I'm thinking they may just convert it into a proper premium card. With normal transfer rates, better partners, and a (possibly small) SUB. Maybe take out the annual spend threshold when they make the transfer partners and rates normal.

I don't see them changing the rates. They want the flexibility to transfer to partners at their actual cost. I'm not that bothered by that aspect of the card, though it does add confusion.

CMIIW but I don't think those who consider "ability to waive the fee" before applying are the consumers they want to target. It's more about the ones thinking "what value can I get for my AF"

not sure what the issue is with the transfer rates. Considering that you earn 2 per dollar it is better than 1:1 from UR and MR. The issue is the earn.

That's not the reason this card won't be a success. Just not that big of a deal and the logic behind it makes sense. I wish Chase would harmonize their ratios so that transfers to Marriott and IHG made more sense.

The issue is you can redeem them at $0.01 per point, and that's what makes the transfer rate bad

Because their flex travel redemption is better than UR or MR by more than the transfer rate means it is not better redemption rates? Huh?

Once SPG gets absorbed by Rewards, I think this card has the potential to fill some of that niche for anyone who can cheaply put the 25k on it annually.

1) Right about at the 25k level the transfer rates (though not as flexible) are better per dollar of spend.

2) For hotel bookings the redemptions are right in the neighborhood and much more flexible.

The main drawback is the hump and the tail of the curve.

The earn rate is good, it's the redemption rate that's bad. Meaning if 1.4¢>1 mile then the partners are essentially worthless.
