Marriott - Points required went up after Category change

Hi all,

I made a reservation for a Marriott in January and did not have the points at the time. The Category for the hotel went up in March. It is now asking me to pay points at the higher rate. Is this how it works? I thought I had locked in the lower category redemption rate but it appears it does not work like that.
