1) I can book now by points and then pay with the certificates that I will have received by the time of my stay.
Where do you get that from?

2) The cost of the room may not exceed the value of the certificate (i.e. I can't pay any difference with points).
True

3) My understanding is that category 5 hotels are moving from 35k to 30/40 depending on peak season.
Sounds right.

Question: What will the certificates cover, post peak/offpeak transition? Will it cover a 40k peak category 5 room? Or still only rooms that are 35k or less?
Only 35k rooms and less

Bonus Q: Do we need two separate reservations since the certificates are in seaparate names? Or can we be on one reservation and then pay with our separate certificates?
2 separate reservations, cause it's two separate accounts. Though the reservations can probably be combined by calling.

TIA!

Apologies if this is answered elsewhere, but I tried searching, to no avail.

Thanks Smart Man! For #1, where did I get that info from? I initially asked in another travel group if I could lock in the 35k rate now as pay later with points, and then "pay" for it with the certificate by adding it to the reservation when I receive them. I was told I could. I then called Marriott and asked, and they acted like I was stupid for even asking, that of course that's what I could do.

Why, is that information wrong in your experience?

I’ve been told by a Ritz Carlton hotel manager that the categories are changing on Jan 31. Has this date been confirmed?

Neither the Marriott or spg app have been working for a while. Anyone else having trouble? Ive tried deleting and downloading again and no luck. The app launches, but then by the sign in page it just shuts down

I believe the spg app is being discontinued, but not sure when. Still wouldn't explain the MT app not working.

Has anyone noticed the pricing for upgraded rooms at Marriott hotels is bonkers? It used to be an additional 5k or 10k points per night to get an upgraded room (when available), but now even slightly upgraded rooms are pricing at more than a free night! Was this an announced devaluation that I missed or a stealth one or just an IT glitch?

No one responded, but just to give an example - an Intracoastal room at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa from 2/10-2/15 is 200K points....but an Oceanfront room 'upgrade' for the same period is 425K or 225k extra points! The charge for that little 'upgrade' is 55k per night or more than the original room. There are numerous other examples of this.

How much less spend is being put on the Amex SPG cards now that they earn only 2 points a dollar and when are they going to bring it back to 3 ppd?

So we didn't do too much talking about these things. Later when I spoke to Arnie sorenson (CEO) he didn't really want to talk about this point so I didn't push him. Later I spoke to Leeny Oberg (CFO) and pushed her a little and all she mentioned is it's up to amex to decide to make it happen.

Duh.

Marriott decided to hike up the rate?
