Marriott finally explains what happens to existing certificate

https://onemileatatime.com/marriott-travel-package-mapping/

Those rotten pos at Marriott!
Couldn’t attach certs at 4 different hotels for 6 months!
Was on the phone for 4+ hours while the reps checked to no avail
(some of us have jobs and can’t be on the phone that long!)
Anyone want to join a class action?

This sucks. Simply for the reason that the Cat 6 I purchased for 30K more points is worth the same as the Cat 5. 7 & 8, 9 & 1-3 are in the same boat. They are messing with half of the people that purchased these certs. Oh man!

Unless you were planning on actually staying at that hotel, it seems that attaching a certificate to a property didn’t actually do anything. The actual issue from what I see is that certain categories will receive the same certificate as lower categories, for example a category seven and category eight will now both receive a category 6.

They should refund the difference or something. And they definitely shouldn't have announced it the day after they stopped selling it. That shows that they knew what they were  going to do and yet they still kept everyone in the dark.

I agree. I also have a few category 6. They should either return the 30,000 points to us or let us add another 30,000 points and upgrade to the next category up.

Dan is in for a surprise on this one:

Quote
My guess is that the tier 1-3 certificate will be good for hotels that are a unified category 7 or about 60K points per night. That would mean if we book a stay with that certificate by January that it should be valid in any SPG or Marriott hotel. My guess is that the tier 4-5 certificate will be good for hotels that are a unified category 8 or about 85K points per night. That would mean we would have more time to book a stay in any SPG or Marriott hotel and it would work even after January when category 8 properties go up from 60K points per night to 70K-100K points per night.

Dan also predicted that a category 6 was a good purchase based on its likeliness to map into a category 5. I thin that Dan will lead the charge to get a refund of the 30k points for the categories that got screwed.

The new website is now live.

First thing i noticed is that my status is Plat Elite (from Gold).

Second is Mystic Marriott (I have a reservation for this week) was downgraded from an 8 to a 5. I'm told they'll reissue the certificates tomorrow at the new rate. A savings of 15,000 per room per night (60k total)!
If you don't care why would you comment?

I'm plat elite on the website, but plat on the app. Also, points haven't been transferred from spg yet.

Probably an error. Other areas of the website show Gold.

Bc reservation systems haven't yet been merged, and SPG's reservation systems block redemptions on that property as it has limited participation with SPG rewards. I expect you'll be able to redeem for the garden villa once the reservation systems are merged.

My SPG account converted into a separate Marriott account (even though they were linked prior to the merger). anyone else having a similar issue?
