Honestly, your reservation is YMMV until you actually are in the room. In this case, officially you don't get loyalty benefits when booking through 3rd party. If you add your loyalty number, you will sometimes get all or some of the benefits that typically accompany your status.

I've always done it at check-in and they thank me for being a gold member. Usually get the free water but upgrade is YMMV. I don't stay at hotels too often though.

Was basically the same price in cash but I booked it for 13k UR instead of 35k Marriott.

+1
Check in is the easiest time to add it. Usually will work for benefits.

My spin is usually that I would love to have booked  through the website direct... but I had a promo expiring etc.... they tend to be more accommodating that way...

I have done it at check in by giving them my account number and have been able to utilize the lounge and all the other perks.

YMMV as to benefits.

Major room upgrades are usally not given except if demanded [ask not so nicely]. If your booking thru a 3rd party that's a reason for denial but abvisiosly it depends on front desk rep. They can see upon checking where the reservation was made.

In my past experience, I did get upgraded with 3rd party bookings  but YMMV. My guess is, late check out and other benefits are usally easier to get with 3rd party bookings.

Yeh I got that too. I pretty much got all the benefits (room upgrade, lounge, late checkout)besides for it posting to my Marriott account and crediting me points and a night.
