I don't believe there are published criteria. I did not - I was approved in 48 hours and now see 5 year extension and got new card in the mail.

Right before new years. Guessing whether it needs manual review and/or interview is based off of an algorithm plus maybe a random sample.

Due to a significant increase in application volume, we are extending the grace period from 6 months to 1 year for any submitted renewal application. This means you will continue to receive full benefits for 1 year while U.S. Customs and Border Protection is finalizing your renewal application.

Thanks,
I ended up checking the websites multiple times a day till I found a same day appointment at night that worked.
Note: even though when you select the location it only shows the next appointment 1 month + away, once you click on the daily calendar you see 1 or 2 random openings much closer.
I dont see an option for daily calendar can you elaborate ?

International? No need for an appointment. Just ask a CBP guy to conduct your interview on the spot.
Domestic? Try an hour after scheduled arrival. If they don’t let you in early worst case scenario is you’ll wait a bit.

Official, called "enrollment on arrival", look for the signs BEFORE passport control, no appointment needed

what does this mean? even though this is set to expire within 5 years you are granted an automatic extra year?

When you submit your renewal you are granted an extra year if your renewal doesn't clear before your original expiration

Same when you get a new passport, just update online. If not you will have issues at the airport....

Legit asking for a friend...

Flying out to Cancun tom morning and only realized now that her Passport is expired (they though it expired august 2020 but it was really 2019).

She has a valid Global Entry card. Can she use that to get into Mexico and back into the US? Does it help if she is a teenager who is flying with her mother?
