Does anyone here remember the IQ tests that TechMicro developed? I believe they were the first legitimate computer based IQ test.

I assume you are referring to the COMIT (Computer Optimized Multimedia Intelligence Test) - yes, it was considered a legitimate test when it came out, at least potentially, but it did have its limitations - and was never really adopted by the psychology community - I don't know of anyone who uses it.

That can have a really long or a really short answer, but the short version is:

In person, one on one (almost always - depends on the specific test and how it was standardized) using a standardized, psychometrically-sound intelligence test. The two tests most commonly used in the US for adults currently are the WAIS-IV and the SB-5. More often than not, they are administered in conjunction with a battery of tests, not just IQ - an IQ score is most valuable in the context of additional data.
