Nonprofits for newbies
« on: March 05, 2022, 08:49:26 PM »
My small Shul is going through the process of registering as a nonprofit.

Until now, everything was unofficial with individuals covering the various expenses directly or with cash from the pushka.

Would appreciate advice from anyone in the know regarding the following:
  • Bank account
  • Accounting software
  • Paying Baalei Keriah
  • Paying members of Shabbos morning Kollel
  • Eventually paying a Rabbi

TIA.

If you didn't already file for 501C3 status this person is very cheap. Keep in mind you might want to get your own bi laws that reflect the balance of power you want in the organization.

First step is to create a corporation with your state, then you can open a bank account and process money as an entity rather than as individuals.

As a house of worship, you're not legally required to file for 501(c)(3) status in order to be a nonprofit but it can be beneficial for a number is reasons.

I recently went through a similar process and you can PM me with questions.

Thanks everyone who helped with this.

I’m still trying to find an accounting software good for the most basic donation acceptance and vendor payments.

Any help in this area would be really appreciated.
