Shul between NY and Detroit
« on: June 03, 2018, 02:57:49 PM »
Long story short - I am driving from NY to Detroit for a family Bar Mitzvah. Instead of driving straight through on Friday, I'd like to drive partway Thursday night and catch minyan in the AM - any ideas?

I know that I can probably catch something in Pittsburgh of Cleveland, but I don't know if I want to drive that far on Thursday.

TIA

Scranton may be a drop out of the way but it's kind of on the way. How many hours do you want to go before stopping for the night?

CLE is probably the most logical spot.
Can also stop a couple of hours before CLE and catch a later minyan here if you can't drive to CLE that night.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

That is what the host suggested. But how late can I catch a Minyan in Cleveland? 8? 8:30?

Scranton was a logical choice, but still adds a couple of hours.

Bufallo or Niagara will only add an hour or so if you drive through Canada. Pretty sure both have daily minyan

Thanks for the info and suggestions. One other suggestion I received, - although I need to follow-up - is to reach out to Chabad of Penn State. I don't imagine that they have a daily minyan during the summer, but it might be useful for someone traveling when the college is in session.

The yeshiva in Morristown is open during the summer and they have a few minyanim daily with the latest being 9 or 9:30. It is about 15 min from the i80 and 287. Hope this helps

Pittsburgh is out of your way. Cleveland is on your way. But I understand that you don't want to have to drive that far on Thursday night.

I think you should go for Kingston, PA. That will get you 2.5 hours out of Brooklyn (if that's where you're starting from) and it's only 15 minutes out of the way (meaning off of I-80.)

Morristown is a little too close, and doesn't buy me much.

Dont think so... should not be more than an hour total

I did a little more checking, you're right on the timing - it's about 45-50 additional miles to my trip, so its back in the running, but still might be too close of a stop.

Just a post-trip follow-up, and thanks to everyone for their advice. I managed to successfully make minyan in Cleveland. Just a couple of details:

- I drove from NY/NJ to Clarion, PA - about 300-325 miles.
- I stayed in one of the cheaper motels near the highway (didn't want/think to use points to stay somewhere better, as I was only there for a few hours) - there are half a dozen or so in Clarion, and if one so desires, it's easy to find a better one.
- I checked out of the hotel about 6:30am, and made it to the shul in cleveland at about 8:50 for a 9am minyan. Obviously YMMV depending on the time of day.
- After davening, I stopped at a small bagel place called the 'Bagel Shoppe'. The food was okay, definitely not the nicest place, but a decent value for someone who was just passing through on their way to Detroit (Bagels and eggs for the four of us for <$20)

Special thanks (Yasher Koach) to Dan for the minyan list and advice.
