EV and Plug In Hybrid owner question
« on: June 11, 2018, 12:50:54 PM »
For those of you who own or lease a BEV or PHEV-

Do you have an additional charger (or more correctly EVSE) in your garage or carport that you use OTHER than the 120volt/15amp EVSE that was supplied with the vehicle?

If so, what amperage?  Did you have an electrician install a breaker and line for it or did you use the dryer outlet?  Where did you purchase the affermarket EVSE?  Or did you purchase it from the auto dealer?

I have one and know intimately how they work so I l am not looking for information like that, I am interested in what other people have done.  An owners/user poll in essence.

Thanks for your replies

Have one charger.
Running a 220 volt would have cost more than I would save since I mostly charge overnight

What are you guys driving. When I lived in Canada I seriously considered getting one. Now I only have one car and probably will have to wait a while until I get one

Still driving my 2011 Altima, but the Tesla 3 sure seems tempting.

Would a 220 line make sense to add?

I don't know with the Tesla, but my Ford gets a full charge on 110 in 6.5 hrs. 220 would do it in 2.5. installing the 220 would have run me 1500 at least for the wiring, since my basement is done and the walls would have to be opened

Yup, or the new leaf. Would have been upgrading to one of those. Though my understanding is it's a long wait for the model 3

I'm in no particular rush, just wondering if now is the time to take the plunge.

My garage is above unfinished basement with the electrical panels. I guess I should ask for a quote for a 220 line.

Yes, also some states have rebates for installing charging stations

On a Fusion PHEV it makes no fiscal sense to be installing 220v service equipment nor even buying the 220v EVSE setup for that matter...even if the wiring or dryer receptacle was already present.  The only time I charge my Fusion PHEV is when there is an empty electric vehicle charging station at the front of the parking lot.  Sometimes I also plug it in at my business.

For a true BEV that someone is putting miles on, an at-home 220v EVSE setup seems necessary.  A 110v/15 amp Level 1 EVSE is going to supply the vehicle charger with 1320w.  A 220v/30 amp Level 2 EVSE that plugs into a dryer outlet in the garage is going to supply the vehicle charger with 5280w.  A 220v/50 amp Level 2 EVSE that's hard wired is going to supply the vehicle charger with 8800w.

I'm contemplating manufacturing/distributing/retailing Level 2 EVSE products, so I'm trying to get an idea of what people are actually doing.  EV sales are only going to grow, and I'm seeing lots of these BEV Fiats and Kia Souls etc with fairly anemic battery ranges.  As HBS alluded to, a 110v Level 1 EVSE is only going to charge the battery at the equivalent of 3-4 miles/hr.

The wait time for a Model 3 is about 4 months to a year, and base model customers could wait until 2020, Gill said.
doesn't seem so sure

Need to receive it by 12/31. Doesn't seem like it's going to happen for the 35K car :(

I placed my reservation over 2 years ago on the announcement date. I got a notification about 2 months ago asking me to send my configuration and it would be delivered in 4-6 weeks but I'm really holding out for them to make the base model (35k). Long range model is 49k which is just too much for me when I was really expecting 35k - 7.5k (fed deduction) - 2k (NYS deduction) = 25.5k.

Hopefully I will still be able to get it before 12/31 but now I'm getting worried it won't be available in time.

Yeah thats why I'm not sure if I should wait and get half the deduction ($3,750) or if I should just go for the 49k version

Whats the difference if you charge immediately to 90% or if you schedule 90% at 8am? Its at 90% regardless when it charges

Some electricity providers charge different rates for off peak hours
Additionally in nyc there is a program from coned that gives rewards for charging at night
