Not Everything Is Qantas First Class
« on: June 17, 2018, 09:35:38 PM »
Welcome to my first trip report!

Introduction:

I was thinking about going to Melbourne to visit family and had heaps of points just burning a hole in my pockets, so why not shed some of that weight.

At the time I had an abundant of AA and UA miles so was looking for some good awards with those programs. Whilst I was still on the fence if I should go or not, I stumbled across a flight in QF F using AA miles! My mind was made up for me! I couldn’t let this pass so booked it on the spot. At the same time I was on united.com trying to find a good flight for the return. The day I was looking for had quite a bit of availability and ended up booking a flight via Asia.

My trip looked like this:

Outbound
72,500 AA miles + $24.20

Flight 1
JFK-LAX
American Airlines - AA117
First Class - A321

Flight 2
LAX-MEL
Qantas - QF94
First Class - A388

Return
80,000 UA miles + $81.80

Flight 1
MEL-BKK
Thai Airways - TG466
Business Class - B772

Flight 2
BKK-ICN
Thai Airways - TG658
Business Class - B773

Flight 3
ICN-JFK
Asiana Airlines - OZ222
Business Class - A388

Disclaimer:
This trip was taken about 2 years ago so some of the details may be a little outdated.

I am going to be publishing this report in 5 installments:

Introduction
AA First - JFK-LAX
QF First - LAX-MEL
TG Business - MEL-BKK and BKK-ICN
OZ Business - ICN-JFK

Thank you for reading, and any feedback welcome!

Looking forward!
I've only done QF F on the 747.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Part 2

Introduction
AA First - JFK-LAX
QF First - LAX-MEL
TG Business - MEL-BKK and BKK-ICN
OZ Business - ICN-JFK

I arrived at JFK approximately 2 hours prior to my flight, but found out rather quickly that there was no need to arrive that early as the Admirals club is underwhelming. I spent about 45 minutes there and had a beer before heading to the gate.

Flight #1
JFK-LAX
American Airlines - AA117
First Class - A321

Sitting at the gate next to us was a beautiful American B77W!

Plane Spotting

Plane Spotting

As soon as I boarded I was pointed to my seat (2F), offered a pre-departure drink (water), and given a pair of Bose(!) headphones, an amenity kit (Cole Haan) and a menu (although that was not needed).

Pre-departure Water

Cole Haan Amenity Kit

Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones

The seat was of the reverse-herringbone variety and was perfectly comfortable for the 5.5-hour flight.

Cabin

Once airborne, service commenced with a Diet Coke and mixed nuts followed by the standard – never changing – Borenstein business class lunch/dinner. The starter consisted of couscous salad and an unidentifiable (almost inedible) smoked fish with chopped vegetables. The main course was chicken, rice and snap peas and while edible, the sauce was tasteless. The dessert was a disgusting and stale pineapple chocolate cake. All in all, this was not a “First Class” meal, however, I found the service by the purser to be very good and attentive.

Lunch - Starter

Lunch - Main Course

After lunch, I reclined the seat and watched a movie before taking a nap for an hour and a half. I wanted to get some sleep since by time I would be boarding my Qantas flight it would be almost 20 hours since I woke up. Before long we commenced our decent into LAX and had smooth, on-time arrival.

Relaxing with a Movie

An interesting story happened during the flight which I’m sure many of you have witnessed before.

At some point during the flight we hit some mild turbulence (nothing too bad) but the captain announced that everyone should return to their seats – including cabin crew – and all cabin services are henceforth suspended. Anyway, the guy sitting across the aisle from me kept ringing his call bell which went unanswered. After about 5 minutes he walked to galley where most of the crew were standing and gossiping and asked for a drink… he was firmly asked to return to his seat by command of the captain… Ok, then!

Thank you for reading!

It still amazes me how the KSML menu hasn't changed. I flew this route many times in 2016 in the same cabin and the food was EXACTLY the same. Shame on Borenstein for not thinking out of the box...........

It sort of reminds me of that one meal your grandmother makes every shabbos that no one likes it, yet everyone still eats it.

Couldn’t agree more! I’ve stopped ordering kosher meals and bringing my own food. Much better.

Part 3

Introduction
AA First - JFK-LAX
QF First - LAX-MEL
TG Business - MEL-BKK and BKK-ICN
OZ Business - ICN-JFK

Upon exiting the flight from New York, I made my way to the Tom Bradley International Terminal for my Qantas flight to Melbourne. I may be alone in this view; however, I think the Tom Bradley International Terminal is one of the nicest terminals in the USA – that I have been to.

Since I had a few hours before my flight I spent some time browsing Duty Free before heading to the Qantas First Class lounge. To put it simply: the lounge is gorgeous! The lounge itself is split up into many areas with plenty of seating in many different varieties (restaurant, bar, lounge, recliners, and casual seating).

Before leaving the lounge I had a shower which, to my disappointment, was not as nice as the rest of the lounge. Before too long it was time to board the A380 to Melbourne.

Flight #2
LAX-MEL
Qantas – QF94
First Class - A388

When I arrived at the gate there was already a large crowd and several gate lice floating around. Boarding commenced around 45 minutes prior to departure with First Class. The aircraft operating this flight was VH-OQH which was painted in their special “GO WALLABIES” livery.

This was my second time flying on an A380… All I can say is: “WOW!” What an airplane! When boarding this massive behemoth of an aircraft, with so much space and a grand staircase leading upstairs, it’s easy to forget you’re on an airplane!

I was greeted at the door by the flight attendant who’d be looking after me for most of the flight. She escorted me to my seat (2A) and showed me the workings of the suite. Qantas have 14 suites in their First Class cabin in a 1-1-1 layout. It’s worth noting that all F and K suites use the right aisle, while A suites have the entire left aisle with no other traffic.

The suite itself is very spacious with lots of storage space and gadgets. The seat is initially facing forward but swivels into a reverse-herringbone after take-off. The one downside is that there is not much legroom for take-off since you have the back of the suite in front right at your feet.

After settling in, the flight attendant came around and offered me pyjamas, amenity kit, headphones, a menu and a pre-departure drink. I asked for ginger ale in a champagne flute because... why not?!

Once boarding was completed, the safety video was played, we had a quick taxi and began our take off roll. It amazes me how a machine of this size and weigh can take off so effortlessly and quietly! It’s quiet enough to continue a conversation without having to raise your voices.

The one downside to the A380 is that the windows are very far from you, therefore making it difficult to look out the window. But there is nice Hi-Def tail camera.

Watching Take Off from the Tail Camera

As soon as we reached 10,000 feet the seatbelt sign was turned off (and remained off for the next 15 hours) and I changed into my pyjamas.

When I returned the flight attendant asked me if I wanted to eat or sleep first. I opted to eat as I was quite hungry. She set my table, bought me a glass of water and the meal. I opened it and it looks so gross that I didn't touch it and settled for a deli sandwich that I brought with me. The meat was as dry as the Sahara Desert and the rice was practically raw.

She felt so bad and was trying to find other food to give me, but I assured her I was used to the sub-par food already to care too much.

Mmmmm… Delicious! Let’s eat!

Uh, no!

After my delicious dinner of a day-old pastrami sandwich with mustard. I asked the flight attendant if she could make my bed as I was very tired at this point. She obliged and while my bed was being made I went upstairs to check out the lounge area. The lounge area is nice, but there is not much going on there. It is just 2 small couches, a screen showing our flight progress, a magazine rack and a self service bar.

On-Board Lounge

Cool Kangaroo Logo

I came back down to a very cozy looking bed. There is a sheepskin seat cover/mattress pad which makes the bed extremely comfortable! Aside from this, the seat is very wide and long, so there's plenty of wiggle room. I snuggled into bed, closed my eyes, and slept soundly for close to 7 hours!

Bed

Ooooo! Oh, so cozy!

When I awoke, there was still 6.5 hours left to the flight. I asked the lovely flight attendants for some fruit which was served right away.  After that I made myself busy for a few hours by watching some movies and touring the plane. Approximately 2 hours prior to landing breakfast was served. Breakfast looked more appetising and I partook. Surprisingly, it was semi-decent.

Before long we were beginning our descent into Melbourne and this fantastic flight was sadly coming to an end. While the food situation was a real downer on what was otherwise a real “First Class” flight, the enthusiasm and attentiveness of the crew made up for it. While I’m not a fan of these long night flights to Australia, this was one of the first times I arrived feeling very refreshed! This was by far one of the most memorable flight's I've taken.

Touchdown in Melbourne!

Part 4

Introduction
AA First - JFK-LAX
QF First - LAX-MEL
TG Business - MEL-BKK and BKK-ICN
OZ Business - ICN-JFK

After a lovely time in Melbourne, it was time to head back to the states. Now, a regular person will simply hop on a 13-hour flight to LAX and then a 5-hour flight to JFK. But why would I do that when I can take a 9-hour flight, followed by a 5-hour flight and then a 14-hour flight?

So that is exactly what I did!

In this part, I’m going to cover the first two flights which was MEL-BKK and BKK-ICN. The third flight, ICN-JFK will be covered in the next and final installment.

I arrived at Melbourne around 3-hours prior to departure, checked in and was handed a lounge pass. Thai Airways use the Air New Zealand lounge in Terminal 2. When I arrived at the lounge it was initially very busy but it soon cleared out. There is plenty of seating and a nice section of food (non-kosher) and drink.

ANZ Lounge – Casual Seating

ANZ Lounge – Lounge Seating

ANZ Lounge – More Seating

ANZ Lounge – View

I spent some time relaxing in the lounge, had a few snacks and drinks, and headed to the gate about 45 minute before departure.

I love walking through the concourse in Australia and the Far-East and seeing a lot of interesting aircraft that one doesn’t normally see in the US.

Plane Spotting (Emirates A380)

Plane Spotting (Garuda A330)

Plane Spotting - My Ride (Thai B772)

My Ride – Head On

Since there were very minor differences in both flights, I’m covering them in one installment. Also, being that I was asleep for 4.5 out of 5 hours on the BKK-ICN flight, most of this review will be focusing on the MEL-BKK sector.

Flight #3
MEL-BKK
Thai Airways – TG466
Business Class – B772

Flight #4
BKK-ICN
Thai Airways – TG658
Business Class – B773

I was greeted at the door by a group of bowing and smiling flight attendants, directed towards my seat (12A and 14K respectively) and offered a pre-departure drink (mango juice), a Samsonite amenity kit and menu.

The seat is forward-facing, angle lie-flat… not the most comfortable seat out there to sleep in, but perfectly comfortable when reclined and relaxing.

Once the cabin doors were closed, the safety demonstration began and we taxied to the runway for a smooth take-off. We had beautiful views of Melbourne on climb out. There is a tail-cam but it was only broadcasted on the screen located on the bulkhead.

Once we reached our cruising altitude the cabin crew sprang into action and commenced the inflight service. Service began with a beverage service followed by the main service. The meal was, to put it mildly, not very good! This flight took place after Passover, so I received a Kosher for Passover meal. The chicken was dry and tasteless, but at least the potatoes were good. I had an espresso to finish the meal which was very good. There was no kosher snack on board for later in the flight, but thankfully I had my own food.

Ginger Ale (Post-departure)

After that mouthwateringly delicious lunch(!), I reclined my seat and relaxed for a bit. Australia is known as a “Sunburned” country due the redness of the outback, and I never understood that until we were flying over the Outback. I looked out of the window and saw the vastness of the outback for the first time! About half way through the flight the crew came around offering snacks and drinks, I asked for a mint tea which was promptly served.

The Outback

The “Sunburned” Country

As we approached Asia, we were treated to some spectacular views and amazing cloud formations! Add to that the gorgeous wing flex and the incredible GE-90 engine on the beautiful 777, I was glued to the window until night fell.

Eventually we started approaching Thailand at which point I asked for a tea to go with some pre-packaged goods I brought with me. We then commenced our decent and that concluded the flight.

Tea

I cleared transit security and made my way to the gate for my next flight. Being that this was a late-night red-eye departure and I slept most of the flight, there really isn’t much to talk about here. I didn’t eat anything during the flight and just asked for a cappuccino before landing.

I have wanted to fly Thai Airways ever since I was very young and am pleased I finally got the chance so many years later. Although the seats are sub-par and not the most comfortable out there, the food was whatever, the crew were very attentive and professional.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thai have upgraded both of these flight to an Airbus A350-900 which features staggered full-flat seating; same as on their A380's. Much more competitive.
