You look at the whole picture of the person. You don't base it on one thing.
IMHO BO was trying to get diversity on the court. Something that has been sorely missing in the history of SCOTUS.

I'm assuming that at least 50% of people that can be a SCOTUS justice are white male, CMIIW. But even if it's a lower percentage, you can't prove it was a racist pick just because it's a white male.
