I think the idea is, you'll get at least the points amount back of whatever package level you buy, but you can get more (potentially) if you grab a hotel that's going up and then use it for the hotel stay or if they let a refund of how many points that hotel would be.

With 270K Marriott points (90K Starpoints) you can get 132K United miles and 7 nights in a Marriott category 1-5 hotel. Ignoring the free nights completely, that’s a value of 1.47 United miles per Starpoint or 0.49 United miles per Marriott point. This makes buying a travel package a no-brainer if you want United miles."
I'd add here "vs. without the packages where 270K/90K would only get you 110k BEFORE the 7 night cert"

so the real question is where am I going on vacation next? That would determine if I use my SPG to buy a package or just booked an expensive hotel that is going up

so i called up to get mine extended and this is what now shows up in my account "Rewards Certificate P830 PARTIAL PKG-CAT 1-5 - 45,000 Points Expires 08/02/2019". anyone knows what this means?

If I have a tier 1-3 package and want to stay at a current Starwood hotel, is it best to attach it to a Marriott hotel now or just wait until after 9/18 to book the Starwood property?

Is anyone else having a hard time finding a hotel in Cat 7 to attach a cert to that will be going to a Cat 6 combined category. I cant seem to find any that have availability.
