Pros and Cons of Different Banks
« on: June 28, 2018, 01:15:01 PM »
Based on all the recent uproar about Chase closing accounts I thought we might talk about Pros and Cons of different banks. To start, a friend of mine mentioned banking with First Republic. Does anyone have experience with them?

In CA it's a decent option if you're looking for a small bank.
They have some frum bankers and loan officers, which brought them at lot of community bank

I really like Schwab.

Pros:
1. No fees maintenance fees regardless of account balance
2. Unlimited free checks
3. Unlimited ATM fee reimbursement
4. No foreign exchange fees
5. Account balance earns (low) interest
6. Deposits seem to clear faster than other banks - typically same day or next day

Cons:
1. No way to readily deposit cash
2. Checking account requires a (free) brokerage account

I don't find the cons difficult to overcome at all. Pros 3 and 4 create a great alternative to currency conversion when you need cash abroad.

I use Chase as well but with the recent shutdowns would like a bank that knows me, has a relationship with me and wont shut me down for depositing large checks or anything else they deem an issue without speaking to me.

Very happy with capital One in Jersey. Only real con for me is that you cant see (referring to seeing an actual copy of the check) check deposits on your online profile. I bank with Chase as well where I can see that info online.

Capital one doesn't let you view check image of checks that went out of your account?

Schwab App.
depositing through an app doesn't scale well. It's good to have a real location to go into.
I use Chase as well but with the recent shutdowns would like a bank that knows me, has a relationship with me and wont shut me down for depositing large checks or anything else they deem an issue without speaking to me.
Not hard to have a personal relationship with a Chase banker. They have Chase Private Client, JP Morgan for higher level and even if you don't qualify for CPC if you go in and shmooze with the branch manager you can become friendly with them to the point where you can clear anything with them. At least where I am.

As a general comment, there's a big difference between personal and business banking and they should be differentiated in a thread like this.

Did you ever try chase? I had chase, sovereign, td, capital one at the same time, I felt the most comftorble with chase the amount branches available, online interface, and their customer service,  at the time that i closed my sovereign account sovereign didnt have an option to deposit checks by phone which i liked very much, sovereign is good if you have triple endorsed checks.... That's about it. Happens to be sovereign has now a great mortgage [broker] that works for sovereign and used to work for HSBC his name is Jacob shechter.

Capital one I would rate best after chase, their branch availability is less then chase and I was a little bit annoyed by their security questions online but nothing major to complain about. I think they are also great for wiring but I personally never used them for wiring, they also have a great savings account capital one 360 formerly ing direct no fees no minimums not locked in.

Td I hardly used they convinced me to open an account I made a deposit they froze it for 30 days since It's a new account whatever I ended up closing that account.

The straw that broke the camels back was when I made a ATM withdrawal of $400 and the machine only spit out $20 bills I got 19 $20 bills and 1 $5 I went over to the teller and they told me its impossible since they just recounted a couple minutes before, I opened a investigation and after 30 days they returned $15 versus in chase when my check got stuck in the ATM they credited my account with that amount and they told me they'll investigate the matter if it turns out false they would retrieve the money from my account.

You're saying you never had any issues try both let me know which one you like better, it's like flying ElAl For 10 years try united you'll never look back.

Day to day banking chase is the winner.
Savings capital one 360 is the winner.
Depositing triple endorsed stale checks sovereign is the winner since they don't know what's coming or going.

And of course don't forget to use mint.com to see an overview of all your accounts and never give them your banking user name password give them the access key capital one and chase bothe provide access key for financial institutions read only access and you can revoke it at any given time.

A very big drawback of BOA

https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=80384.msg1755734#msg1755734

They were the worst of all of the banks I experienced. Cap 1 was a bit of a hassle since it went through a central estate unit but it got done in one shot and only meant a delay of about a week and then needing to go to a branch a second time. Sovereign, Chase, TD, Valley, and some smaller banks all issued checks either to the estate or beneficiary on the spot.
