Booking flights

Hi. I was just wondering if there's a guide on the steps of booking an international flight. I've got tons of points and I would like to do a lot of traveling. However, I am a total novice when it comes to the actual booking. If I want to fly to a certain destination, I have no clue which points to use or even the first step in figuring out a way to get there. So if anyone would like to give some sort of tutorial (the more comprehensive the better) that would be awesome.
