Halacha Of Cruises Departing Wednesday-Friday
« on: July 09, 2018, 11:54:48 AM »
I've noticed that Kosherica has several cruises that depart on Wednesday-Friday.

Does the halacha of not boarding a boat from Wednesday-Friday no longer apply on today's cruises?

Correct. Unless you’re concerned that you may have to do melacha on Shabbos fixing the boat, or the ship turbulence in a storm will ruin your oneg Shabbos.

There are so many things that no longer apply today that we still do anyway.

Why is this one different?

according to the Star K, it still applies.

That isn't happening on these cruises.

exactly. There may be some leniency or people just don't ask. I would love to go on a cruise to some exotic location but this is often an issue.

I've heard that there's a heter as cruises today don't have the seasick issues of boats in the past.

I'm just curious when we decide to keep doing what we've done and when we change it. I guess the same thing would apply to cholov yisroel/cholov stam?

similarly, if you take any metal pot to a lab, they won't find any traces of food in the walls yet we don't allow meat pots to be used for dairy and vice versa.

Curious about this as well. Since there are a number of cruises that leave on Friday and are out at sea on Saturday. Which would seem convenient for SS clientele as they won't miss any of the destinations. But I was under the impression (as Dan was) that SS tended to avoid these.

Why's that? I agree with the premise of your question, we don't generally change things even after the "reason" for them no longer applies, but cholov stam is a totally different sugya.

Kosherica offers cruises like this and they bring Rabonim onboard as well, so clearly there is room for the heter here. Just curious if anyone knows more details and widely accepted said heter is?

In this case, a Talmudic era boat would still be prohibited nowadays, but our modern cruise ships are entirely different entities never imagined or ruled upon by Chazal back in the day.

Why is C"S different? People stopped keeping C"Y in the USA because they felt the government would enforce the halachic problem. Others feel that once there is a minhag, we don't change it even if times change.
I'll let @Freddie will talk about the timtum lev v'moach aspect.

Is that not a slippery slope? That would seem to apply to so many things we do, starting from s'feika d'yoma and going all the way down the list.

thats an argument against the pri chadash
rav moshes argument was that even if it is a davar shebiminyan, govertment makes it chalav yisrael
this is not the place for this to develop into a C"Y discussion, just saying it wouldnt fit into this category
