Prepaid Plan That Doesn't Expire/OBI
« on: July 16, 2018, 01:01:17 PM »
I currently have an OBI for my landline, but it's hooked up to my wife's google voice account.

I'd like it to have it's own number that doesn't make my wife's computer ring every time we get a call.

What I'd like to do is get a prepaid plan that doesn't expire if minutes aren't used. If that doesn't exist, is Tracfone (needs activity every 6 months) my best option?

Thanks

I believe there's a way to disable the ringing on the computer.  I think you have to uncheck the option of forward to Google chat in your Google voice settings. Check the obi thread.

Even if that were possible (and it probably is), we still want an emergency phone in the house in case the power goes out

How are you going to have internet without power?

I won't, but if the phone that it's connected to is a cell phone, I won't need power.

If your next question is going to be "but don't you have your own cell phone"?? I would answer: yes, but what if we have a babysitter who doesn't, or what if one of my kids has to call 911 when the power's out (and a host of other irrational fears that I have to deal with)

If you just need 911 then get any cell phone without service (which works for 911) and continue using Google voice. If you'd need to call hatzolah it won't work.

But if you want to use a cell phone (which I don't understand because then you're anyways paying for each minute which defeats most of the Google voice purpose) I wouldn't recommend TracFone as they are expensive.

Tello which runs on Sprint has a prepaid option (3¢ a minute) that you need activity once in 3 months.

You can put your google voice account on Do Not Disturb to get around this issue

get a battery backup. For just the internet and obi it should be very cheap.
