I believe that if you become Platinum now then it will become Platinum elite after 8/1 but if someone buys it then I will confirm that beforehand

But IMHO this is in no way the reason one should want platinum status with Marriott.

United silvers still have to pay a $50 close-in fee. But the benefit that I find useful is free economy plus seats at checkin, plus you get the benefits of a free checked bag and group 2 boarding.
