Why is going to Crayola on chol hamoed better? Most things there are not appropriate for chol hamoed.

What specifically do you think is not appropriate at crayola? Food tours I understand.

It's not a minhag - writing is a melacha and therefore assur on chol hamoed, except in certain circumstances. Having said that, there are definitely those that hold that a child drawing/coloring is muttar in the cateofiry of tzorech hamoed.

Even if it is, would it be more appropriate to go there where the entire place is based on doing activities which are not really supposed to be done on CHM than to watch them make chometz Herr's products? Same would go for apple picking and the like.

That's highly subjective. If you want to tell me everyone holds the Herr's 'activity' is muttar (even if potentially not fully appropriate) while not everyone holds that the Crayola 'activities' are muttar, then I can maybe hear it. But if you hold l'dinah that both are muttar I don't really see how 'appropriateness' comes into the equation.

Not sure which way you're going on apple picking, but that has it's own separate host of issues to work through, as I'm sure you're aware.

As just about all questions of appropriateness are.

I see an issue with going ahead to a chol hamoed trip where the intent is to do something which is only allowed due to tzoirech moed. Don't go and it won't be tzoirech moed. Watching a goy make chometz is simply taste.

Same could be said about the kid coloring/drawing at home. Those that hold it qualifies as tzorech hamoed clearly disagree with you.

I do not feel he is a halacha problem but rather that it is not an appropriate choice. Why go to somewhere like that just to create a need?

Anyone here that knows the area enough to tell me where I can rent an airbnb near Philly proper but kind of away from all the city noise?
I want to take the family to Philadelphia but I want to stay at a laid back, quiet, place with a big lawn and possibly a pool.

Bala Cynwyd/Lower Merion is your best best. Prob not cheap through. Just go on AirBnb, put in philly with your dates and how many beds you need, select pool in amenities, and select all of the house type options that are not apts or hotels. That should get you what you're looking for. You can tell pretty easil how far the various neighborhoods are from Philly proper, which has rivers on each side that make it clear (to the north is less clear).
