I am guessing the entire world of SPG is foreign to the reporter. He doesn't even realize that for many the SPG points are actually used in order to transfer to airline miles, let alone understand the Nights+Flights packages.

He might have taken the SPG AMEX deval as just another little detail of devaluation, which doesn't make a big difference in the story to someone who isn't into this, yet accumulating points by buying coins from the US Mint and depositing them, is something totally different, that most people don't even realize is a way to accumulate points in hotel loyalty programs. That, and the ability to use those points to throw a baseball pitch in an important game.
