Connection threads can become bent even with proper storage (need to budget for the odd panel replacement here and there)
         Can Crack or Break

You can use a magnet or a tiny double sided push pin

IME tying down might not work, and if the wind is a little strong, your mats can actually rip.

The best way to keep mats secure is to put evergreen schach around the perimeter of the mat. If you don't have that, try some tree limbs with several branches.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Wouldn't a few 2x4's keep it down ?

I have a rather large sukkah, with several mats required to cover it. IME if the wind manages to get to an edge, the mat will act as a sail. That's a pretty powerful force and could sometimes overcome the 2x4s (I guess that is unless you put quite a few of them, not only one or two). I've tried many things with varying degrees of success. Ever since I decided to put evergreen around the perimeter I have never had any wind move my mats.

Didn't budge.

Though some tarp I put up to augment the דפנות did give in to the wind at one point. And despite the fact that that allowed the wind to get under the mats, they stayed put due to evergreen on top.

I was surprised to not see anybody's schach blown off. Even unsecured mats. My shlock went up & my new expensive fluorescent is finished.

The led fluorescents die after the first drop of rain. Old school cheap ones is the way to go.

That's why you put the 2x4's along the edges. It's not so many pieces of wood that way, and it's more secure. Bonus points if you zip-tie the top and bottom 2x4's together, sandwiching the mats - that thing ain't budging an inch.

I used strips of lulav this year. My sukkah is on a raised deck (10+ feet off the ground) and at the back of my attached house (anyone who live in KGH knows that the shared driveway/alleys are like wind tunnels), but survived some pretty intense wind already.

You probably mean LED tubes, or LED shoplights. Florescent and LED are different types of light sources. Either way, there's no real rule of thumb. You can find badly made florescent fixtures and well made LED's. You could be buying the wrong type for your usage as well.

I got something from Sunlite. All the hardware stores were pushing that.
