Which Flight Should I Take?
« on: August 07, 2018, 06:53:50 PM »
Positioning flight for Antarctica on Chanuka:

UA option: 60K miles.
UA CLE-EWR 5:31pm-7:09pm B73G First Class
2:46 connection
UA EWR-EZE 9:55pm-10:50am B764 Business Class seat 1D

Or
AA option: 57.5K miles.
AA CLE-MIA 1:45pm-4:43pm RJ145 Coach
6:02 connection
AA MIA-EZE 10:45pm-9:51am 77W Business Class seat 3A

UA Pros:
-WiFi and first class on both flights
-Polaris club kosher wine, food, shower, PJs
-Longer longhaul flight

UA cons:
-Need to light menora in CLE at 4:02pm (Plag hamincha, a b'dieved time but still can light with bracha) and hope there's no traffic in order to make a 5:31pm flight with checked luggage. There is a later flight CLE-EWR if I miss it, but it's an RJ-145 and has a tight connection. Unless there's someway to light in EWR or the Polaris Club daybed room :D
-767 seat
-Arrives into EZE an hour after AA

AA Pros:
-77W seat
-Arrives into EZE an hour before UA
-Can use the connection time to light menora at JJs

AA cons:
-3 hour flight in coach without wifi
-Shorter longhaul flight
-Longer total travel time

What makes you think you can light in a place you don’t live in?

Don't forget the biggest detail: I will be on that MIA-EZE flight.

Now if that's a pro or a con, I don't know  ;D

I'd go with AA. I feel like the cons aren't a huge deal, and assuming all is good with lighting, it will be less stressful.
I'd just make sure I don't get the seat in front of SF

I don't see any heter to light in MIA, and Plag is a real b'di'eved, but why not have bnei bayis/shliach light for you at home?

I'd go with AA. I'd also add a big pro for the AA option is that you don't connect in the northeast in December.

UA Pros:
-WiFi and first class on both flights
*I'm sure you can manage without wifi for 3 hours.
-Polaris club kosher wine, food, shower, PJs
*Kosher wine at jj house, jjs home, jjs home, bring your own.
-Longer longhaul flight
*No biggy an hour to two difference.

AA cons:
-3 hour flight in coach without wifi
*Oy that should be the worst of your problems.
-Shorter longhaul flight
*Worth it to go visit jj.
-Longer total travel time
   1hr difference.

You can light candles or at least be יוצא with jj, spending chanakah with your brother, a good shower, good supper, and your pros, and of course something fishy, but no statues for aa so hoping your baggage is fine without stautes.

Lastly have a safe flight on which ever one you chose.

That's a nice additive, but who wants to feel like hes on a pressure cooker that has to check in and past security and all in 1hr-30min.
He can nicely go on aa as it seems to be a better option and saves 2.5k  ;).

Halachic shaila aside, I'd go to with AA.
Being GS you would still worry about making it to CLE with enough time to check bags and make the flight? They wouldn't hold it for you?

I could probably call in a GS favor to have them print the bag tags for me.

All else being equal, probably AA, flight is still long enough for a night's rest. Long connection is saved by being able to leave the airport, see your brother and eat dinner. Better seat

For various reasons mentioned. I'd say it's a no brainer to go with AA.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

To me this is purely a halachik question for your posek
And the answer is that it's preferable to light and then eat at JJs.
AA it is.
