I didn't get into the specifics yet, but right now this question is back in the air as the Rov didn't realize I was flying solo with my family staying at home.
Back to the UA flight.
Better to light with a bracha after plag hamincha with the family at home than at JJs without family.

Do I buy both flights in case of NYC weather and eat the $150 AA redeposit fee if there are no issues?
Hmm...

How about positioning from somewhere else, that might work better for your family (while you are away at work) and for you?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

No place is easier for the family than CLE.

Wow very impressive family comes before anything.

Already peeling potatoes ;)
It seems like I will be heading your way for those extra potatoes you peeled, just freeze them till i make it there.  ;)

Now that @Dan is finished we should turn this into the what flight should I take master thread.

I'll go:

Im flying from EWR-DTW for an NBA game

There is a 2 PM flight and a 3 PM flight

Both are 10K UA

Pros of the 2 PM:
First class is completely sold out (all other flights that week dont have more than 1 seat missing) so Im thinking The team booked first class for their staff maybe or some people who cant make it on the team flight and this could be a good opportunity to get a hook up

Cons: will be tough to leave work that early to make the flight and no first class seat for me

3 PM Pros:
Most likely will get the first class seat and have more time at work (yes for me thats a PRO)

Cons: Miss out on possible Hook up/ celebrity sighting

Positioning flight for Antarctica on Chanuka:

UA option: 60K miles.
UA CLE-EWR 5:31pm-7:09pm B73G First Class
2:46 connection
UA EWR-EZE 9:55pm-10:50am B764 Business Class seat 1D

Or
AA option: 57.5K miles.
AA CLE-MIA 1:45pm-4:43pm RJ145 Coach
6:02 connection
AA MIA-EZE 10:45pm-9:51am 77W Business Class seat 3A

UA Pros:
-WiFi and first class on both flights
-Polaris club kosher wine, food, shower, PJs
-Longer longhaul flight

UA cons:
-Need to light menora in CLE at 4:02pm (Plag hamincha, a b'dieved time but still can light with bracha) and hope there's no traffic in order to make a 5:31pm flight with checked luggage. There is a later flight CLE-EWR if I miss it, but it's an RJ-145 and has a tight connection. Unless there's someway to light in EWR or the Polaris Club daybed room :D
-767 seat
-Arrives into EZE an hour after AA

AA Pros:
-77W seat
-Arrives into EZE an hour before UA
-Can use the connection time to light menora at JJs

AA cons:
-3 hour flight in coach without wifi
-Shorter longhaul flight
-Longer total travel time

Don't know if it changes the analysis, but there's also F space open on AA 931 (MIA-EZE 10:45pm-9:51am) on Dec. 6th.

Doesn't seem like F is worth the premium on the 77W.

Option 1:
UA EZE-EWR 9:00p-5:50a B764 J

Option 2:
UA EZE-IAH 10:20p-5:45a B772 J
2:30 connection
UA IAH-LGA 8:15a-12:34p A320 F

Option 3:
UA EZE-IAH 10:20p-5:45a B772 J
1:40 connection
UA IAH-EWR 7:25a-11:44a B772 J ("F")

-------

Option 1 pros: Direct flight. Arrives earliest, by far. Direct aisle access and bulkhead available.
Option 1 cons: B764 seat is quite lousy, especially for someone of my height. Not sure I'll be able to sleep at all.

Option 2 pros: B772 has a way better and roomier seat. Slightly later departure allows me to head to a restaurant for dinner in EZE.
Option 2 cons: Connecting flight - arrival in IAH is the same time as Option 1 arrives in EWR. Will have a seatmate, so with I'll climb or will be climbed over. Need to do the customs and rechecking dance in IAH. 3 hours in an A320 is just not that enticing. Arrives LGA, which is less convenient for me than EWR. I arrive home around 2:30 before Shabbos, which is risky (especially in the winter).

Option 3 pros: Arrive earlier, around 3:30 to Shabbos. B777 > A320.
Option 3 cons: IAH connection is quite tight for customs and rechecking. Still not a ton of time before Shabbos.

-------

I think it boils down to this: is a way better bed worth the hassle and late Friday arrival? I must say I'm leaning towards Option 1.

Takes at least an hour from landing till I get home, and Shabbos is at 4:15.

Eh, that's all part of the cheshbon. landing 5:15 before candlelighting is fine IMHO.
Better int'l seat, great domestic seat, 1:40 connection is 100% fine with GE, no brainer given that you're not flying with kids.

Option 4: Fly to YUL and take boat all the way down

You mean YQY :P

In any case, this is for the return.

Option 1 or 3.

Is the 764 J seat that bad? Have not flown it.
