I enjoy IAD, so if you're like me that can play a role.
Enjoy it for 55 minute connection? Why?

To add stress to your day in case of any delays.

Aside from your track record with AA, I'd take the nonstop and get home 2 hours earlier. You have better couch / internet / drinks at home to make up for the lack thereof on the plane.

Option 1:
Pro: Nonstop
Con: AA RJ-145, no wifi, all coach, no exit row open, MIA RJ gate

Option 2:
Pro: Probably get upgraded on both segments, exit row confirmable, WiFi, FLL, mainline flight
Con: Connecting flight

86 minutes. But I hear ya.

Why do I feel like AA is totally going to mess me over though...

Well, that's the other factor. I have tickets to the 8pm home run derby.
Will AA get me in sooner than UA? Who knows.

Most of my AA delays seem to happen at the gate or on the plane. It's an impressive string of bAAd luck.

FLL-20 mins
MIA-30 mins

My AA track record certainly has me worried.

Are those times to reach the gate, or the airport?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

Airport only. MIA RJ satellite gate will definitely add another 15 minutes.

I'm surprised at you for not taking that into the initial comparison. It's not like you to do a novice style comparison of time from one address to another. Also remember that FLL is mostly highway on the way there (and there's an alternative route).

Returning a rental car?

Which terminal does UA fly out of at FLL?

The time beforehand is not critical. I have an 8am bris and that's about it.

Probably will Uber.

In that case, as much as I hate MIA airport and despise AA, I would probably be inclined to take AA, though I'd probably check status and options on the day of flight. The bottom line is that there's no way of knowing what will end up being a better option, and the AA is a short flight.

I will qualify this by saying that I once connected at DCA, and it was a breeze. I can't recall if I ever connected at IAD, if that connection is supposed to be easy based on gate assignments (though they could definitely change) and conditions at IAD, I might opt for that.

I'd be wary of a connection if you have to be at the Home Run Derby by 8pm. Nothing like a misconnect to mess you up. If you are delayed with AA by 1 hour, you just equal the UA time. If your UA flight is delayed an hour, you are stuck in DC.

You'd have to be insane to that UA flight. You'd be turning a (i) 3-hour (ii) non-stop (iii) domestic flight in coach (oh the horrors) into a five-hour ordeal (bad), including a connection (worse), which doubles your chances at having an issue, including a misconnect which may ruin the whole night (no thanks).

You'll survive without wifi and a slightly larger seat.

That might belong in the pros and cons of where one lives.
