Often medicaid looks at your current income...

as of now, Obama Care forces health insurance companies to except patients with pre-existing conditions so CH"V if you need to use it you have time to make it then, especially that its only for 3 month

There is an inexpensive option called catastrophic insurance.
You pay a low monthly fee - but if you need the hospital, you kick in a high deductible. (like the first 1000).
For young and healthy people, it's a great option. It's a real insurance - you pay for your basic needs out of pocket - and if you need something major  it will be covered and won't put you in the poor house for life.

Call up a few insurance companies in your state (try blue cross or oxford) and ask them for the single, catastrophic plan.

Be very careful not to have a gap in coverage. I am not sure where you live but in some states a lack of insurance for 30 days will exclude any pre existing conditions. SO be very cautious about not having insurance. You mentioned "Medicaid" so I think that means NY. They look at current income and any assets you may have/had for the last 3 months. SO if the $25K was in the bank they need proof that spent. If you own a car it can be an expensive one (i think KBB cant be more then $4500)

but Medicaid in NY will cover all your old medical bills, even if that Dr doesn't except medicaid they'll mail him a check.

though: it only works when your new to medicaid, its like a signup bonus  :D

Medicad NY only goes retro for 3 months but what if you wont get approved or had assetts.  Dont wait the 3 months get medicaid right aways so you dont get caught with a Pre existing issue!

do you live in ny? even if you cant get medicaid (which generally depends on last 30 days gross income), if you have a family (wife/child) you might qualify for family health plus, which is similar to medicaid but considerably easier to qualify for. if you dont, you almost definitely qualify for healthy ny, which is subsidized but you do have to pay a monthly premium (many different options for how much). if your under 26 under the new law, which many companies have started applying already, you will likely still be able to be covered by a parent's insurance, if thats an option for you.... good luck
