How to prevent Windows 10 from automatically restarting?
« on: August 14, 2018, 11:31:35 AM »
One of the computers in my office seems to be restarting itself on an automatic schedule every night. It drives me crazy, because I often try to use teamviewer, either when I need to access something that is only accessible on a desktop windows computer, or when I need information stored on that computer. The problem is that the hard drive is encrypted with bitlocker, and nothing will start until the password is entered on the computer.

I have searched all kinds of settings to make sure the computer never shuts down on its own, but can't seem to find what it is that causes it (I am guessing some kind of automatic application of Windows updates - but I've searched for that too, and thought I disabled it).

How can I figure out what is causing the restart, and permanently disable it from automatically restarting?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

What have you tried so far?
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

It's probably windows update. You can check in settings if any updates are pending/failed.

Did you try this (to disable updates)?
Download WUMT:
https://goo.gl/F3z3xo

Run it.  Bottom left, select Disabled.

If you do that you won't get ANY updates including security fixes.

Where do I find that?

In "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\System and Security" I see Windows Update, when I choose to run it as Administrator I get:

All I want to be able to do (assuming it's the updates that are causing the restart) is to have it done only manually.

Doesn't look like it's configured to automatically restart.

So how do I get rid of it, and force it to require manual restarts?

Solution 2 & 3

I already tried solution 2, and alas this morning I came to a restarted computer.

Solution 3 is irrelevant as the computer is a desktop on a wired ethernet network.

Success finally?

What is FCI?

I think it was solution 4 (adding registry key) from below:
