Mold in basement
« on: August 23, 2018, 12:22:37 AM »
Hi, anyone have experience with mold in basements? My basement sometimes has had leaks, and tends to be damp...our dehumidifier broke a while ago, and now there's mold growing on the wall. I can get a new one obviously, but wondering if there are people who are expert at dealing with this and don't have an agenda that they push, right or wrong (i.e., their own personal solution that they can install which will solve all problems).

a) Get rid of as much continuous dampness as you can.
b) treat/ get rid of the mold

You can get a water proofer to dig outside your house and coat the foundation with ?cement? to keep the water from seeping in.
You can coat outside the house above ground, and have uncracked cement around the outside.
You can put a circulating fan behind the plaster board walls and run a dehumidifyer in the basement.
Bleach will kill mold.

Good luck.

You need a new dehumidifier first,  and then call a mold specialist

water proofing a basement is extremely expensive and they dont usually guarantte dryness , they can say the water is coming from beneath the foundation and there is not much to do bout that

That is why they make sump pumps.

If no water is coming in from beneath the foundation then they can't claim that is where the moisture is coming from.

moisture is the step before water. the ground may be wet enought to cause mold but not have enough water to activate the sump

Water is the #1 cause of mold in the basement. Remove the water away from your house and you remove the mold problem.

Place one in each corner and two in the middle. If you have any basement space left you can use that.

We have one and no mold. Yes the basement does have moisture.  :)

Are there people who can come in to analyze my particular situation and give an objective opinion of what the best options to do? I want someone who has expertise, but my impression is that most people who have a business in this line are selling particular products...

Yes there are experts in the field but they also want to sell their products.

Are there any reliable people (looking particularly in the NY area) that can come in for a fee and give objective advice for best steps to take?

I think of it as similar to the financial advisor field - many have their own products to sell, but you can go to those that charge a fee. Obviously, there's no fiduciary standard in mold remediation, but the concept is there, I think...

whats there to do
New homes are built to have sump pumps. There is drainage all around the foundation that goes into the sump pump pit. Adding one after the fact is not the same. I would have the home checked out.
