Unless you spend the whole day on it, it will take you @ least half a year of serious studying.

I have Rosetta Stone for many languages, and have personally done (or am currently learning) Spanish, Portuguese, and Mandarin Chinese.  I find that for the simplicity and ease of the software, it really works.  I know Spanish and Portuguese might not be a good proof, as theyre similar and I knew a mediocre Spanish before I started, but Chinese is a unique language and it works just as well.  I don't have time to do it every day, and even when I do I only do it for about an hour, but I would highly recommend it.

It takes 3 months with Pimsleur spending 30 minutes a day listening to audio cds (and speaking words and conversations along with it) to speak a language well enough to hold a conversation.  Sometimes you'll need to repeat a CD and spend an hour on that day.

It's great for a driving commute.  I liked it a lot but I never did Rosetta Stone.

From what I heard Rosetta Stone's technique is "out of the box" comparing to the rest of the programs.

I played around with Rosetta Stone and it seemed pretty good, but it moved too slowly for me.

Another option I just came across last week is called Mango.  It's a basic listen, read, speak, flashcard kind of system, similar in many ways to Rosetta Stone.  The nice thing about it is that it's web based (which I believe is now also available for RS) so you can use it wherever you have internet with no need for installation (flash based).  However, the real nice part about it is that many public libraries subscribe to the service so all you need is your library card and you get it all for FREE (I checked b-more and ATL)!!  Just google your library +Mango.  I just started working at brushing up my Spanish.
