This presumably has got nothing to do with amex, it's the stores that are funding these offers.

According to DOC, Staples and Lowes offers are paid by AMEX (to replace the OPEN program).

Amex can eat the cost since they already fixed this loophole. Clawing back this offer is petty behavior and I would not expect this from them. How much is this? A few thousand in total?

Fwiw I had the offer added on cards with individual separate logins. No multi tab trick used and I still got nailed.

Also its widely reported staples threw a temper tantrum on this. Canceling orders etc. Could explain it.
