I am fine with a baseball cap as long as the kid is learning, but social expectations require a hat so I got no choice.

The symbolism of doing the norm, even if you don't fully agree has a positive impact.  It teaches him and the rest fo the family to respect authority.  That you as an individual don't know everything, but must bow to those who know better.
On the other hand, we want to teach our kids to be individuals and not just follow without thought.  I will sometimes tell my kids that I disagree with something, but am doing it nonetheless.

Ferster on New Utrecht and 51st has good hats and decent pricing. My hats last long.

thanks for the comments. too late now, I went to Kova, they were very busy, nice and friendly. I spent a lot more that the above referenced Amazon hat.
I love visiting Boro Park. Went pizza (limited supply of soap and paper in bathroom - how do they pass inspection? lol.
bought a new suit and pants for Shwarma Jr.
This seems like a sure way to go under financially. at least I supported some Ungarische and Syrian Yidden in the process.

I paid about $135, plus for the carrying box ($29), with taxes 175.
Last hat also from Kova lasted six years.
