approval for United but lowered credit line for CSP
« on: September 05, 2018, 10:21:16 PM »
i applied for a United credit card from Chase( I have the freedom, 2 SW and the CSP card with them). I got the 30 day notice and last wk I saw online that I was approved. I was on vacation and just returned home and opened a letter from Chase re: the approval. I was approved for a credit line  of $18,600 but they reduced 2 of my other Chase lines. 1 of the lowered limit I didnt mind but they reduced my CSP from $18,000 to $5000. I have not used it much in the last yr but that is a significant decrease. I also dont need a $18,000 credit limit on my United card. Can I call Chase and negotiate with them to increase my CSP credit line and decrease my United? I mostly fly American and SW but I am going to Europe next month and United had the cheapest fare plus  the 40,000 offer. Thanks for replies.

Go for it.  No problem. If you can wait a bit, I would, just to pass a billing cycle.  But you can  definitely call to realocate your credit.  A sentence explaining your need for more credit on the CSP vs the United might be helpful but may be completely unnecesary.

can you explain the reasoning for waiting a billing cycle vs calling them now. Also, do you think I should call them or send a secure message?

I don't think this is a complicated question. Just pick up the phone and tell them you want to move over credit from one acount to another. You can always move credit around freely with Chase.

I was never asked questions on the phone either for reallocating credit.

I helped many friends do it with the RC/CSR and some Phone reps wanted to be friendly and started asking questions....

I was just wondering how difficult it was to move around credit allocation  after they did it for approval. I dont use the freedom card much and it has a $6400 credit limit-do you think its wise to ask them to close that account?

Was just thinking that instead of reducing my credit limit to close the Freedom and bring that limit over to my CSP

I called Chase and explained to them that I would like to have more credit line to my CSP and less to United. She said-no problem and moved it over-effective immediately.

Don't close it.  But if it's a Freedom 5% category card, its really only good for $1500 spend/quarter.  I'd move $3K off that line and transfer it to the CSP as well.   Then you could hit the $1500 quarterly spend and it would still report to the credit bureaus as sub 50% utilization.

Hopefully you left enough on the UA that you can purchase whatever tickets you need and again have sub 50% utilization report.
