1) Not when it's weather related. In that case, if one is cancelled, many are cancelled.
2) That only helps if you schedule your domestic flight with enough leeway. If your original layover is less than 2-3 hours, there's not that much room for rescheduling especially since it will often require a change between LGA/EWR

The issue with domestic flights is that getting off the plane will be more difficult than a delayed TLV flight

Regardless the issues don't apply to a flight leaving NY Thursday morning. You would need to be held on the plane for 36 hours for an issue with shabbos to arise. Your only issue may be a misconnect in YYZ or a delayed flight in YYZ which again renders the NYC-YYZ flight irrelevant.

It is much more than that. It is very easy to arrange all aspects of a last minute shabbos there.

And that's all that I was bringing to his attention.
He mentioned that he flies AC because they get in early so he shouldn't have issues with Shabbos. To that I replied that AC isn't the most reliable option to get to Israel on time for Shabbos because there aren't many convenient rebooking options on a Thursday evening.
Smarter options are UA 84, LY 4 (seasonal) or LY 28 (LY 2 depending on the season).
Or with stops, BA (7:55am departure) or VS/LY (8:15am departure)
All these options are obviously for people in the NYC area.

Indeed. I travel YYZ-TLV once every six weeks. And there is no chance of being stuck on a plane by adding USA-YYZ
