Ring doorbell Cloud subscriptions?
« on: September 16, 2018, 03:12:52 AM »
I tried searching for a thread, but couldn't find any that discusses this.

I see Dan promotes this product as he posts deals on the ring doorbells every time it's on sale,  but what I don't understand is you pay a premium price for the doorbell but then you have to pay $3 monthly or $30 for a year or the $10 plan monthly or $100 plan yearly which I think is crazy.
Is there any way around this cloud service, meaning is any third-party apps or sort of a hack to avoid having to pay for their cloud service then again be able to use their Cloud servers to be able to watch past recorded videos?
Or is it cheaper to install a regular security camera aside for the ring doorbell which I can see who's at my door and be able to talk to them?

Just bought the ring doorbell 2 which Dan posted last week but now it seems it's useless if I can't see videos of the past which is the reason why I wanted a security doorbell camera.

$30/year to view past videos is crazy?

Yes insane if they didn't charge you a crazy price for the product itself I would say okay , now that the charging a premium price for a ring doorbell product the least they can do is offer you free cloud service and not $30 a year or $100 a year if you want the premium subscription.
Let's say someone has four- five of these ring devices all around their house whether being a motion sensor with a camera or where they're being a ring doorbell now you're not going to be paying $30 a year as that only includes cloud service for one device, you're going to be paying $100 a year which includes all ring doorbell devices you own, so x 5 years that's already $500 plus the 5-6 devices you own which is over $1,500 which I think is crazy.

This was the biggest issue in pushing me to go with Skybell instead of Ring. I didn't want the monthly fee.

Costco actually has the 1080p version on sale right now with 1 year of service (and a chine) for $160

 https://www.costco.com/RING-Video-Doorbell-2-w/-Bonus-Chime-and-1-Year-Ring-Video-Cloud-Recording.product.100379270.html

The nice thing about the Ring (or Ring 2) is that it works off a battery if you don't have doorbell wiring. Nearly all of the others need wires or are cheaply made garbage. Blink is supposed to be coming out with a wireless doorbell as well but its been a long time since they announced it and it still isn't available.

I got the wired Ring as well as one of the previous gen stick-up cams on prime day.

The cost for storage isn't ridiculous by comparison:
- Skybell storage is free for 7 days - there is no paid tier
- Amazon Cloud Cam storage is free for 24 hours, 7-days will cost you $70/year for 3 cams
- Nest Charges $50/yr for 5 days of storage - per camera
- Ring's $30/year camera for 30 days is actually a bargain.

The $100 ring tier also includes home monitoring (but I believe that's more for the ring security system) - if you have a home alarm system $100 year for monitoring (including cellular backup) is a pretty good deal.

My real hope - having tried the cloud cams and also ring, is that Amazon will find a way to consolidate feeds from all 3 of its home security lines (Blink cameras being the third - incidentally, they are very different cameras and while storage is free,it's limited to 2 hours of clips per camera) and offer one big plan for all of your cameras.

And what happens when they increase the price of the subscription

Do you mean before or after the cameras are obsolete or EOLd? :)

My hack would be to use the 19.99 Wyze Cam instead of the Ring doorbell.

Benefits:
1. Cost only 19.99
2. Free 14 day cloud storage
3. Programmatic disabling (and re-enabling) of motion sensor over Shabbos and YT

Drawbacks:

1.  It is an indoor camera so it you will need a window to see the front door or you can leave it outside and take a chance if it is a covered area
2.  Requires local power

Buy a kindle for $15 with the next sale, leave live view always on for your Ring, and use a screen recorder app.

Anyone do this? I guess it can work with any camera.

How do you get it to delete storage and start over when the recording fills up internal storage?

Set the screen recorder to write over past data after x amount of time.
