When buying a washing machine(or any large appliance) from Home Depot, is it recommended to buy the 3 or 5 year protection plan?

Without any more details, I would say no. But if you were to post the cost of the machines and the cost of the protection, there are some instances where it can be worth it.
My general rule is that I keep insurance for the big stuff that I can't afford to cover and skip it when it comes to small things like appliances, electronics, and other narrow coverage plans.

I actually recommend getting it specifically for dryers, which are pretty guaranteed to break down a few times in the next few years
