Why would that change over the course of the month if her status remained the same?

If that didn't change, something else happened.

TBH it's difficult to try and figure out what changed without more details, and those details are things that most people on DDF don't generally look for.

If it went from repayment to deferred, that can drop FICOs.
It was always deferred. Though a new $2,700 deferred SL came on her report this past month from summer class.

So point out to him (and us) which details to look for.

That could be it if she has a thin file.

She has a very thin file. Any thoughts? Should I just pay it off?

If she isn't seeking new credit, just leave it alone. After 6 months, her scores should recover.

Going to start looking for a mortgage in 6 months or so. This coming semester my wife should just pay and not use student loans?

That might help with a thin file (no more loans).

Paying off the other loans won't do much. The damage has already been done for the new account, and will remain even when closed.

Her scores should recover by 6 months.

The only time positive installment loans can really hurt is if the balances are above the starting loan amount. Are her other loans unsubsidized? Did they update with added interest in the balances owed?

Thanx.

She only has subsided loans. The rest is paid via CC.
