So basically you need a friend who's into credit score.
Once you become a joint there is no way you can go off it except of closing the card for both of you.  That ties you to the guy who you become a joint to.

Make sure he doesn't spend more then 10-20-30 % of his credit line,  if he does then rather don't  become a joint it will only hurt you.
If he doesn't spend anything at all on this card, what does it make a difference how much he spends on his other cards?

Sounds risky to me

Is that possible even with a credit history that's only 4-5 years old?
My wife has a 780 FICO 08 TU score.  She hasn't even had a SSN for a year.

I am very careful to pay off my balances before statement closing every month. I have one card with a joint and he doesn't pay off his balance and leaves it at about 18% every month, but seldomly at about 35%.
Does it still affect my score if this card is only about 10-11% of my overall credit limit?

Yes
So what is more important, to look at overall utilization, or at each card individually?

Or try to get him his own card and leave the shared one unused.

Does it make sense for a credit score to go in one month from 750 something to 719
