Which would be great if it wasn't rumored that closed accounts are likely to be weighed less, and maybe not at all, in an upcoming revision by FICO.

We'll see if anyone uses the new FICO versions...

I'm sure at least some banks will. One of the main points behind FICO revisions is to keep up with the various forms of gaming FICO scores.

For example, it never made any sense that being an AU should help one's FICO score, and a whole cottage industry resulted therefrom. Likewise, the fact someone paid a closed CC account on time 9 years ago doesn't tell banks much of anything about a person's current finances and/or habits.

Not really. An AU has no liability whatsoever for the debt, and can have the account deleted at will.

A FICO score is supposed to show a specific person's creditworthiness, not provide insight into how someone's marriage might be functioning.

I bet they are working on marriage predictors.  I bet 25% of the people I hear with bad credit involves a divorce.  LOL

It can be an AU or a joint account the result is the same. If the bills are paid you can't separate who is paying the bills. They both get credit. Now as you have said this is used to play games with by adding AU's out of the blue.

Right, they don't know who's actually paying the bills, but they know who's legally responsible for them. It makes no sense to credit an AU for good history when the AU can have the account deleted if things head south.

Free credit report is per calendar year or 1 year from when you request a copy of your score? Any specific one which is the most accurate or all the same?

Basically have a friend that defaulted on 14k on amex in 07 and when they reapplied for amex this year for the the first time since the got approved for platinum card. A few weeks later they tried for biz plat but turned down cuz of 14k default. At this point they will only take off 10% if want to settle. How should they proceed?

Amex is one of the hardest to settle with. I don't recall ever seeing a 10% settlement with them. OTOH, if this is NY and he paid nothing since 07, it's past the statute, so I guess they figure 10% is better than nothing. The question is what will paying the 10% do for him? What does it give him?
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

I think he meant that they'll only take off 10% not that he had to pay 10%.

Nah, that's to greedy even for Amex. And if indeed that is the case, what benefit is there to that? (other than MAYBE Amex willing to open additional accounts). If it's past the statute, they have no legal way to pursue it, unless you pay even 1 cent, which resets the statute. Make sure no settlement is done without a legal agreement first.

That'd just what it sounded like from what he said. I agree with though, being able to get amex cards isn't worth $13k, $1400 would be worth it though.
