My credit score just took an over 70 point dip, credit karma alerted me but it's showing all my accounts in good standing, no missed payments,  below 30% utilization. The only difference between now and last credit report is my utilization went from around 3% to 19%. Could that have such an effect? Especially since it is below 30%. Any other reason such a thing can happen?

A. It's not a FICO, so who cares.
B. 30% isn't a fine line, as you increase your score will often decrease. Try to stay below 10%.

Because that's what used by lenders.

FICO is a scoring model. Experian/Transunion/Equifax/Innovis are credit reporting agencies.
Credit Karma gives you a Vantagescore which is another model score, and they base it off Transunion/Equifax reports. Lenders don't use that score AKA "FAKO", they generally use FICOs.
Both FICOs and FAKOs are based off your credit reports, just different models.

Before paying anyone, just make sure you get plenty of references, not one. I once did this with someone I actually knew but his partner was a clown. He screwed countless people, basically had a mid life crisis and simply stopped doing business, they broke up..... He took $2500 from me and didn't do a darn thing. Then he cried poverty and gave me a sob story. Called a Rabbi, who basically told me it's a lost case "he had a mid life crisis".

Again- there are some good guys out there who do this stuff well, the challenge is to avoid the clowns.

And; yes, you definitely can do it all yourself but I believe it takes patience, organization. It's not rocket science either but you need to know the process. None of these guys can guarantee anything either, they just consistently hound the credit bureaus, if they don't respond within a certain timeframe, legally they need to remove the adverse item/s..... So with enough hounding, they usually trip up eventually. I'm sure there are some tricks they use but, as I said, if you know the process, it isn't rocket science.

My friend has an Amex Platinum card that is almost 40 years old. It is by far his oldest card (by as much as 35 years). Now he wants to close or downgrade it.

It seems age of oldest account counts even more than AAoA. Does AAoA still include closed cards? Does age of oldest account include closed accounts?

If he downgrades it to keep the history he would have to pay $95 a year for many years until he can close it (when his other accounts will all be much older), correct?

Is my assessment right? Anyone have any advice?

TIA

The card will be included in his AAOA until it falls off the report, no less then in 10 years.
