I think I found a good option with FAFCU.
The question is, what is the ideal loan dollar amount, and the ideal loan length?

The lowest amount possible for the longest time possible.

For Alliant, that was $500 for 5 years. Immediately pay it down to $44 which freed up $456 from your savings account. Then you were paying 5% interest on $44 for the next 4 1/2 years until the payments kicked back in.  I still push a dollar when I log into Alliant from savings to the loan just to keep everything active.

So pay down to 9% then you don't have to pay for the next while?

Here is the FAFCU offer:

Seems good, did I miss anything?

How should I know if when you pay it down it pushes the payments out?  The share secured doesn't even show the term length.  The fine print says you need a $500/mo DD to qualify for those rates.  Go scour MyFako and see who they are using for the installment hack nowadays.  The CB Alliant thread died when the Alliant offering died.

Does a pull from a real estate firm affect score?  Will recon count it against me?

Is it a soft or hard pull? Hard pulls effect your score.
Recon with who?

Otherwise it goes up by .5%
I wonder what people who type "u" instead of "you" do with all their free time.

Hard pull.  Recon in general.  I would think it's obvious that it doesn't indicate an attempt for credit and a recon rep should disregard it.  I was wondering if anyone has experience in that regard.

Generally the pulls reasoning is just an excuse, and this pull will do just fine as an excuse. If it's the legit reason, I doubt an underwriter will reverse a decision because of 1 less pull. But it can help.

Did you try it already, get that info from MyFako, or get that info from a phone rep?

It will be coded as real estate. If anyone counts it against you it's because they aren't going to approve you anyways and that is a convenient/arbitrary excuse.

Crowd sourced data points or first-hand experience

Do you think you could find an Alliant rep to tell you how their loan actually worked?  Do you think you can find an Amex rep to tell you that gift cards trigger Airline incidental charges?
